On June 18, 2024, the first meeting for the WISE-AI project took place at Yfantourgeio in the historic heart of Nicosia, Cyprus. This ambitious project, supported by partners across the European Union, is dedicated to enhancing young women’s employability by intertwining Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Vision of WISE-AI
WISE-AI stands not just as a project but as a movement toward integrating cutting-edge technological education with global sustainability efforts. The primary focus is to equip young women, often underrepresented in tech fields, with the knowledge and tools to influence and excel in AI-driven environments. This initiative seeks to mold a future where these young leaders not only participate in but steer the conversations and actions around sustainable development through AI.
Why WISE-AI Matters
The project emerges against a backdrop of crucial global challenges where both gender disparity in technology and urgent sustainability issues prevail. By educating and empowering young women through structured AI and sustainability programs, WISE-AI aims to address these dual challenges head-on. This approach not only promotes inclusivity but also bolsters innovative problem-solving for environmental and societal sustainability.
Insights from the Kick-Off Meeting
The meeting began with a warm welcome to Cyprus, followed by an in-depth introduction to the project. Discussions focused on the target groups, primarily young women aged 18-30, and the expected outcomes of their increased involvement in AI and sustainability efforts.
Key activities and operational aspects such as project management, quality assurance, and promotion were outlined. Each partner played a role in detailing the steps forward, emphasizing the importance of rigorous project management and the need for a comprehensive promotional strategy to engage stakeholders and the wider community effectively.
A significant part of the meeting was dedicated to the structural planning of upcoming work packages:
- WP1 Project Management: Focused on administrative aspects and setting the groundwork for effective collaboration and reporting.
- WP2 WISE-AI Knowledge Portal: This phase aims to create a centralized platform where educational materials and resources on AI and sustainability will be accessible. The development stages include identifying needs through focus groups, designing educational content, and ultimately launching a robust online portal.
- WP3 WISE-AI Minecraft Game: A creative approach to education, this work package involves developing a Minecraft game tailored to teach AI and sustainability concepts, enhancing learning through interactive and engaging scenarios.
The Road Ahead
The kick-off meeting in Nicosia was just the beginning. Over the next two years, WISE-AI will unfold through various phases of development, testing, and dissemination, culminating in a series of transnational releases and promotional events. These efforts will not only spotlight the project’s achievements but also showcase the tangible impact of integrating AI with sustainability education, particularly for empowering young women.
As WISE-AI progresses, it promises to be a shining example of innovation and inclusivity, setting a precedent for future initiatives at the intersection of technology, education, and sustainability. The journey mapped out in Nicosia is not just a series of tasks but a pathway to substantial change, enhancing the employability and impact of young women across Europe and beyond.
