Our world is full of heroes. We witness them saving the world in epic stories and blockbuster movies. But there are also those who work tirelessly to create opportunities for the disadvantaged. Yet these are the heroes that the world doesn’t hear about too often. Why is that so? The answer is complex & unclear, but one thing we know for sure – these heroes are certainly worth praise and attention.

The heroes we speak of do not wear capes, they can not fly or become invisible. They walk the earth just like everybody else and they are just ordinary people living among us. Yet the positive things they do for our society make them truly special. They are heroes who do everything to include and create more opportunities for disadvantaged people. How? By using sports. Some of them organize free football training for kids living in rural areas, while others go to play relay races with children in orphanages to remind them that we are all equal and stronger together.

In our minds, one example of a #hero is Eduardas, whom we met only recently. You can see him smiling at the top of this blog post. He is a coach at “Feniksas” – a sports club for people with disabilities (yet not only disabled people join its activities).

“Feniksas” doesn’t have a permanent physical venue for doing sports, yet the team is super creative and they are united in their love for sports. Thus, sometimes Eduardas invites his teammates to hold a training session just outside his house. Both people with and without disabilities gather and have fun together by playing sitting volleyball or other sports. Eduardas claims that this kind of activity strongly facilitates the social integration of people with disabilities.

That’s a short and simple, yet inspiring story about a #hero called Eduardas. Do you know more stories like this one? We know that you do! P. S. Stay tuned to learn more about Eduardas and his team! He shared with us some stories, valuable knowledge, and practical advice on the inclusion of disabled people through sports. Interested? All of it will soon be uploaded to Empowerment Through Sports e-course.
